Vermont's VB twenty20 Cup campaign ends (posted 17 Jan '08)
At Nelson Reserve yesterday evening (Wed 16 Jan) Vermont found the going a bit difficult in their encounter with Springvale South on the southerners' home turf. After setting a sizeable target of 224 with the loss of just 4 wickets the Springvale South attack set about ensuring that Vermont's power batting would not upset their plans.
Having dismissed the visitors for a nevertheless credible 175, Springvale South will now meet Airport West St Christopher's CC in round 3. This final round will determine which club represents their respective region as the metropolitan Melbourne champions against a country Victoria counterpart on Sunday 2 March '08 at the MCG.

VERMONT TOPPLES MONT ALBERT (posted 22 Oct '07)
You were promised "a great day of cricket" and these two clubs certainly delivered it. In a finish just about as close as it gets Mont Albert went down to Vermont in their opening inner east qualifier for the VB twenty20 Cup on Sunday at Mont Albert Reserve.
After jumping at the start Vermont had raced to a promising position with the score on 3/101 and just half their innings completed. Then the tide turned and left them struggling after the loss of three more wickets in fairly short order. When the dust had settled Vermont were all out with just eighteen of their allotted overs received and having set Mont Albert a target of 138 that now seemed much more gettable than had appeared likely eight overs earlier.
Mont Albert began their task with a level of determination that soon realized a run rate well in excess of the seven per over needed. Unfortunately, the price for a high run rate was loss of wickets and as the Vermont attack made inroads in Mont Albert's batting order their run rate slowed to produce a run-chase at the finish that could not have been scripted. As the end loomed Mont Albert had found themselves needing around two runs per ball on average and were getting them with just two wickets in hand, and then one. The last two overs were painful to watch as Mont Albert seemed to have the edge and then loose it until with just 2 balls remaining and four runs to win the cry goes up followed immediately there-after by the finger and it was all over.
This game had everything, with 20 wickets taken for 273 runs in 38 overs, moments of glory and even a touch of controversy for the talking point over a cold VB around the barbie afterwards. The final scores were as follows -
Vermont 138 (18.1)
B. Taylor 43, B. Cullen 38, T. Barker 3/31.
defeated
Mont Albert 135 (19.6)
A. Crough 31no, M. Scott 4/12.
Congratulations to Vermont on a great win and thanks to Mont Albert CC whose volunteers were enthusiastic hosts and provided a welcoming atmosphere for players and spectators alike. Likewise, umpiring was of the highest standard from representatives of the Box Hill Reporter District (Tony Carson) and Eastern Cricket (TBA) Associations.
Other Qualifying Matches:
Vermont will now play South Warrandyte Hawks at Vermont Recreation Reserve (Mel: 62.J3) in a twilight match on Friday 16 Nov from 5pm. On the preceding weekend, Mont Albert will journey to the home of the 'Hawks' for an 11 Nov, 11am Sunday encounter (following a traditional Armistice Day 1 minute silent remembrance) at Colman Park - Mel: 35.K7.

NUNAWADING CRICKET CLUB - OPERATION 500 (posted 16 Jun '07)
Nunawading CC recently announced the launch of "Operation 500" which it is hoped will lift their current sagging fortunes back to the level of past glories. With 80 years of history behind it the Nunawading club has a strong tradition of excellence to uphold and is determined to achieve the various benchmarks identified. Administrators plane to guide their club forward into an era that will see them once again setting the pace for community sport in the region.
The club plans to enter teams in Veterans' and Open competition for 2007/08 in addition to a major re-launch of their Junior Development Programme which has faded somewhat in recent years. The new look Nunawading CC will accommodate tomorrows and yesterday's "flannelled fools" from Milo 'Have-A-Go' to Veterans.
A season launch will be held 15 September '07 with all the 'bells and whistles' so if you are looking for a new club, don't be shy. For the full story and access to promotional flyers, visit the Nunawading CC website.
