BLACKBURN NORTH CRICKET CLUB

Five In & Five Through   (posted 11 Mar '07)

Of the five teams Blackburn North guided into semi-finals at the weekend none have fallen short of the task so far and all five will compete for their respective premierships over the next two weekends. In all, the clubs 2nd & 3rd open 2-day XIs, together with both under 18s and the under 12 team won at the weekend ensuring a busy grand-final period for Blackburn North to close out their 59th season of formal competition.

The weekend's round of semi-finals saw a strong Blackburn North 2nd XI deny Bulleen-Templestowe any opportunity to get into their one-sided contest at Len Toogood Oval. After batting first and setting the visitors a solid target of 250, the Northerners' secret weapon, Tony UHR-Henry, set about mesmerizing Bulleen-Templestowe's batting order to finish with the unlikely figures of 9/28. The team is justifiably confident going into the grand-final next week against arch rivals Park Orchards.

At the same time a somewhat closer contest was being fought out on the adjacent oval at Koonung Reserve between the club's 3rd 2-day XI (C1 grade) and a determined Glen Waverley Hawks. Compulsorily closed with 8 wickets down at stumps on day one, the Hawks had set a more than respectable target of 235 for Blackburn North despite being held in check by the middle-aged magik of a perennial Allan Galpin with closing figures of 5/70. By the end of play on Sunday Blackburn North were narrowly home and joined their supporters in the pavilion to claim bragging rights until next week when they are confident of reinforcing their semi-final win with victory over Vermont South for the 'big one'.

In the under 18 competition an unusual development has seen Blackburn North guaranteed a premiership. This season's inaugural foray into under 18 competition has seen four teams from the BHRDCA join with seven from RDCA to enhance their pre-existing competition. Of the four from BHRDCA, two teams were entered from the Blackburn North CC with both winning their respective semi-finals at the weekend ensuring an all Blackburn North final. While the 'green' team, aided by all-rounder Luke McLeod (33 & 4/35), survived a fairly close encounter with a strong Templestowe side the 'gold' team comfortably accounted for Bayswater Park with match-winning performances from J. Amoroso 57, L. Maziarz 52 & Matt Keeble 5/32.

Wrapping up the club's good fortune at the weekend was their under 12 team which after dismissing Vermont for 165 on day one, set about overtaking their score with the loss of just one wicket. Blackburn North now meets East Burwood/Bennettswood next week when the grand-final contest brings these two stand-out teams together again. The only other time they have met this season was in round 5 when Blackburn North won a well matched contest by 18 runs.

Watch the BHRDCA website to find out where our teams are playing their grand-final games and come along to support them both at the grounds during play and back at the club afterwards (Koonung Reserve. Heppner St Blackburn North. Mel: 47.K6).

BHRDC UMPIRES' ASSOCIATION

General Meeting   (posted 18 Feb '07)

The next general meeting of the Box Hill Reporter District Cricket Umpires' Association will be held at the Heatherdale CC (Mel: 49.C12) from 7:45pm on the evening of Wednesday 21 Feb '07.

Extreme Heat   (posted 14 Feb '07)

With a likelihood of particularly high temperatures during the second half of February, the issue of mature aged umpires succumbing to inclement weather (heat/humidity) ahead of their often chronological juniors on the field of play warrants re-addressing. Even if a decision regarding the fitness for play subject to such conditions does fall to the umpire(s), an umpire of advanced age and/or cursed with less than the health of an Adonis may be reluctant to take such action if players are clearly handling the conditions although one or both may be struggling.

Nobody wants to see premature retirement of our most experienced umpires nor a repeat of the incident earlier this season that saw an umpire collapsing on the field due to heat/humidity. With 38C temperatures predicted for next Saturday (17 Feb) it is important that umpires predisposed to heat related discomfort, or of significantly advanced years, are not put at risk.

All of our umpires are reminded that their health is of primary concern. If they experience heat related discomfort they should not hesitate in leaving the field to recuperate, even if this means leaving volunteer umpires in charge temporarily. No umpire should be disadvantaged, regarding their remuneration, as a result of leaving the field under these circumstances and clubs should note a responsibility on their part to assist any umpire, and anyone else for that matter, found to be in distress. Umpires have been issued an information pack which is complimentary to the BHRDCA's existing "Heat Policy and Extreme Heat Guidelines" and is endorsed by the cricket association.

EAST BURWOOD/BENNETTSWOOD CC

Frank Horne Memorial Cup   (posted 22 Sep '06)
(Round 1 at East Burwood Reserve)

Played annually between the East Burwood/Bennettswood & Blackburn CC's in McIntosh Shield grade, the Frank Horne Memorial Cup game will be a round one contest this season. Since 1997/98 this encounter has become one of the most prestigious inter-club traditions of any in the association. Celebrations after the game will be at the East Burwood/Bennettswood rooms when players and supporters from both clubs gather to remember and honour Frank.

We would love to see as many of Frank's old team mates and adversaries as possible attending this year to reflect on a true champion both on and off the playing field. If you were fortunate enough to know Frank Horne personally then you already know why we gather each year. If not, then please visit the East Burwood/Bennettswood CC website which has a page dedicated to this annual clash and remebrance.
