BHRDCA IS BACK !   (posted 7 Feb '10)
(BHRDCA def ECA @ Morton Park East this afternoon)

In their first appearance since 2005/06 our open-age representative team has delivered victory over Eastern CA.

With a healthy start from opening pair Mick Amor (27) and Travis Rowe (31) BHRDCA lost the first wicket at 61 which triggered a mini collapse until Jack Berry (30) lead the recovery from 3/70 to 4/117. Handy contributions from Luke Mason (20) and Adrian Tabacchiera (26no) helped set a credible target of 9/188cc from their scheduled 40 overs. This ultimately proved to be beyond the reach of ECA (96) with Mark Jones (6.3-1-14-3), Andrew Steele (6-1-24-3) and Damien Yze (4-0-15-2) prominent in ensuring that all were back in the rooms early to enjoy Blackburn CC's hospitality.

Notable performances for ECA came from Greg Clift with best bowling figures of the match (7-0-39-4), Andrew Badrock (7-0-28-3), Mick Paolini (8-1-25-2) and Steve O'Connell (23).

JUNIOR CHALLENGE v EASTERN CA   (posted 3 Feb '10)
(Sunday 14 Feb @ Donvale Reserve)

On Sunday 14 Feb '10 from 10am our under-age representative teams will play those from Eastern CA at Donvale Reserve in their traditional annual challenge round. While ECA is the official host this season and will meet the associated costs, they have engaged St David's and Donvale CCs to provide game-day services for all games to ensure everyone has a great day of cricket.

Under-16s will play on the #2 oval (turf) while under-14s and under-12s will use #2 and #3 ovals (synthetic) respectively. All grounds are immediately below St Davids' rooms and are to be accessed from Doncaster Rd with parking available on either side of the pavillion. Parking along the southern access near the Donvale CC is reserved for patrons of an ECA 20/20 final scheduled on the main oval from 11am.

While Donvale CC will assist with setting up the #2 oval and use of portable shade structures, St David's CC will provide change-rooms and luncheon for players and officials.

Enquiries should be directed to the Junior Section Manager Mark Voerman (04 0996 8994).

OPEN-AGE DOUBLE-HEADER IN FEBRUARY   (posted 25 Jan '10)
(Sundays 7 Feb v ECA and 21 Feb v RDCA)

For the first time in several years the association's open-age representative team will play against traditional rivals Eastern CA and Ringwood & District CA.

The first of these encounters is scheduled for Sunday 7 Feb '10 at Morton Park East from where it is hoped our team can send ECA home empty-handed. Then just two weeks later they will venture into the wilderness on the fringes of civilized society to wrest bragging rights from RDCA which the 'boys from the bush' brazenly claimed after mixed success against our Veterans before Christmas. A venue for the RDCA match is yet to be announced and will be posted here when available.

These games are traditionally hard-fought and well worth the trip to lend support, not only to your team but also the hoast clubs that put so much effort into helping their respective associations and playes deliver a worthy spectacle. Good luck to all teams and hopefully February 2010 will usher in a new age of open inter-associations rivalry between our three worthy community cricket organizations.

Fri 5 Feb (update) - The final squad of 15 has been announced as follows with the first thirteen named to play against ECA Sun 7 Feb '10 at Blackburn CC (Morton Park East - Players to be at the ground by 11:45am for a 12:30pm start).

SUCCESS FOR UNDER-12s IN VMCU JUNIOR CARNIVAL   (posted 20 Jan '10)

At the weekend (Sun 17 Jan) our under-12 representative team took out Keith Mitchell Cup against Ringwood & District CA at Chelsworth Park in front of a large gallery of family, friends and cricket lovers from all over greater Melbourne. Set a credible 7/197cc the Ringwood team ultimately ran out of overs and fell short finishing with 9/178 although as the score suggests they made every effort to close the gap. In addition to the fine win over a traditional foe, BHRDCA's Lucas Grierson was named "Man-of-the-Match". In this VMCU under-12 competition, teams play for one of two awards, the Keith Mitchell Shield and Cup. Which teams ultimately compete for them is determined by their finishing positions on the ladder at the end of home and home games. This season the top four fought it out for the Shield while the next four had the Cup up for grabs. Congratulations to all players and team officials on a satisfying conclusion to your VMCU campaign.Full details of this and other teams' performances during the 2009/10 VMCU Junior Shield Carnival can be accessed from MyCricket.

2 OUT OF 3 WINS FOR RDCA   (posted 14 Dec '09)

On Sunday 13 Dec our three representative Veterans' teams ventured fourth into the bad-lands beyond Heathmont in the east. It is through these very waste lands that marauders are known to periodically sweep down from the foothills of the Dandenongs striking fear into the hearts of men. It was here at the weekend that 33 of Box Hill's elders drew a line in the sand and stood their ground at an outpost of the Commonwealth known simply as "Croydon Oval". That name will henceforth be remembered for generations as the place where RDCA was stopped in its tracks and denied a clean sweep of the 2009/10 Veterans' Challenge.

The following report from Paul Hooper covers well the events of that fateful Sunday afternoon -

"Veterans Representative Cricket Alive and Well.
By:  Paul Hooper

Sunday saw the Box Hill Reporter District Cricket Association take on Ringwood & District Cricket Association in Veterans' cricket at Croydon Cricket Club.

Three games were played in Over-40’s, Over-50’s and the newly created Over-60’s team.  A fierce rivalry between the BHRDCA and RDCA Vets has developed over the years and Ringwood were looking for revenge after the BHRDCA won both the Over-40’s and Over-50’s games last year.

The day started with some light drizzle and plenty of cloud but soon cleared to a sunny day, perfect for cricket.

In the Over 40’s, the RDCA won the toss and batted. Jeff Mollison for the BHRDCA got the first 2 wickets and the visitors were off to a good start. Frank McCann was in good touch behind the stumps taking a couple of good catches and when Shane Keneally took 2 wickets in his fourth over, the RDCA were in trouble at 5 for 56. Keneally left the field soon after with what looked like a torn achilles and took no further part in the game.

Out strode the RDCA Captain, Dale Goldsmith who batted with patience to resurrect the home side’s batting total with a quality 39.  Unfortunately the RDCA’s tail didn’t wag and they were dismissed for 116. Several players got into the teens but couldn’t go on with the job. For the visitors, Mollison took 3/12 and Keneally 3/13. Spin bowler, Andrew Davidson chipped in with 2/22 from his six overs.

The BHRDCA innings stared slowly losing a wicket early and the RDCA bowlers were on top. Excellent bowling by Paul Clark (1/11 from 6 overs) and Kevin Smith strangled the BHRDCA batsmen who were 1/16 after eight overs.

But Wicketkeeper/Batsman Frank McCann broke the shackles making 31 and Turnbull chipped in with 21. The RDCA bowlers responded and took a couple of quick wickets to have the visitors in trouble at 5/67. BHRDCA Captain Chris Box was starting to hit out and Andrew Davidson was playing a support role until the wicket of the skipper fell. The game was in the balance but Davidson (25 no) and Anthony Uhr-Henry managed to guide the visitors home with a score of 7/118 in the 35th over.

The Over-50’s is always a close contest and BHRDCA batted first. Captain Kim Albiston made 40-retired and the visitors were cruising at 3/96 until an amazing batting collapse where they lost 7 for 9 to be all out for 105. A fantastic comeback by the RDCA and the pick of the bowlers was Westgarth with 3 for 4.

RDCA were confident of getting the runs but BHRDCA bowlers, Simon Albiston (3 for 23) and Nuttall (3 for 12) were having something to say about that. Great fielding saw this game go down to the wire with the RDCA victorious by one run with one wicket in hand. Their score 9/106 with pick of the batsmen, Schumann, 22 and Ruffle, 21.

The Over-60’s inaugural game was also played on Sunday. The BHRDCA won the toss and batted making 6/105 with Stephen Peter-Budge making 39 and the RDCA’s Ian Leach taking 2 for 12.

RDCA had no problems getting the runs and their innings finished at 4/120. Stephen Pascoe made 42-retired and Ian Sharp 30-retired. The best of the BHRDCA bowlers was Sara with 3 for 30.

The fielding in all games was impressive and although there may be a few radox baths and sore bodies, a great time was had with all games being played in great spirit."

ANNUAL VETERANS' CHALLENGE v RINGWOOD & DISTRICT CA   (posted 27 Nov '09)
(Hosted by RDCA Sunday 13 Dec '09)

Earlier this month all clubs with veteran teams competing were contacted seeking nominations of their brightest and best for the annual 'grey brigade' to engage traditional foe RDCA at cricket, this time in three age-groups -

  • getting past it (over-40),
  • well past it (over-50),
  • forget it (over-60) ...

... and of course then there's the cricket. A venue has been confirmed for the over-40 match which will be hosted for the RDCA by Croydon CC at Croydon Oval (turf), Hewish Rd Croydon (Mel: 50.K4). Venues for the over-50 and over-60 games will be posted here when advised and are expected to be in the same general area.

In the previous years we have built a terrific rivalry playing the RDCA Vets Competition in annual challenge rounds. This is a great opportunity for our “better” players to compete in a higher standard game than regular home & home matches, in addition to maintaining regional bragging rights for another year. We did manage to prevail in 2008/09 but are reliably informed that RDCA is extremely keen to make amends.

Everyone is urged to keep an eye on this web page for advice of the remaining venues and make sure you drop in to support our not so old guys.

UNDER-21:  BOX HILL CC WITHDRAWS CITY OVAL WITH JUST 10 DAYS TO GO   (posted 19 Nov '09)
(Round-2 of the VMCU Neil Wright Shield tier-2 at risk for BHRDCA)

Until today, for the first time in many years the BHRDCA looked set to see a representative team venture onto the hallowed turf of Box Hill City Oval. With CV/VMCU hosting arrangements for Wright Shield matches delivering the venue for our round-2 match on Sunday 29 Nov it was expected that large crowds would gather to see our team play locally for a change at one of the best community venues in Melbourne, but not so now.

Box Hill CC has seen fit to declare the venue unavailable just 10 days before it was scheduled to be used for our round-2 match against Williamstown & District CA. The loss of this venue at such short notice has left the VMCU with a mammoth task of finding an alternative turf venue with very little time left to prepare a wicket. The association will be working with VMCU officials in a bid to acquire a suitable venue and as soon as we receive advice of any developments it will be posted here.

Any turf club with a suitable ground available on Sunday 29 Nov '09 that is willing to host this match from 11:45am is urged to contact either the VMCU Match Committee Chair (David Beatty - 04 1733 5749) or the BHRDCA Secretary (John Toogood - 04 1173 9790) without delay.

NEIL WRIGHT (U21) SHIELD - FIRST CUT SQUAD   (posted 11 Nov '09)

Our under-21 team manager has advised a shortage of suitable players who are available for the dates required of our team attempting to re-enter the VMCU's under-21 Neil Wright Shield contest having been relegated to tier-2 of the competition two seasons ago. We need a squad of 15 to play three fixtured games on Sundays 22 Nov, 29 Nov and 13 Dec '09 with a final on Sunday 10 Jan '10. Of those initially invited or submitted by their clubs a larger than expected number has withdrawn due to unavailability on the dates of play.

If your club has players under the age of 21 years on 1 Sep this year who are of a standard suitable to be considered for an association representative squad and are available on the dates noted above please contact our team manager Dale Harbinson and register them for a final session at Domeney Reserve (Mel: 35.E9) from 6pm Wed 18 Nov before the squad is finalized.

In addition to the age restriction and availability, candidates must be registered to a club in the BHRDCA and have been named this season in at least one club home and home game to qualify for inclusion in the three tier-2 matches. To qualify for the final at least two such games and one of the three tier-2 matches is required.

The BHRDCA plans to schedule inter-association challenge matches for over-60, over-50, over-40, open, under-16, under-14 and under-12 representative cricket this season. Additionally we have again entered teams in the VMCU Junior Shield Carnival (Keith Mackay U16 Shield, Russell Allen U14 Shield and Keith Mitchell U12 Shield) scheduled annually in January. We have also entered an under-21 team again in an attempt to secure our place back in the VMCU Neil Wright Shield competition after being relegated to tier-2 of the competition two seasons ago.

Team Management positions have all been filled but as always there are plenty of support roles available so don't hesitate to come forward and volunteer your expertise for a few weeks to help our teams succeed.

Squads will ultimately be reduced to just 15 players from which respective teams of 12 will be selected for each game. Invitations will soon be sent directly to clubs for forwarding to junior representative squad hopefuls while under-21 manager Dale Harbinson will consider submissions from clubs of any exceptional players that may not have been initially invited. Open squad selection will likewise be by invitation but if you feel someone exceptional has been overlooked feel free to put them forward to the team manager for special consideration.

It is expected that any player accepting an invitation to be considered for these squads will be available for the required dates of play. Players may face disciplinary action if they are selected to a final squad and subsequently withdraw from availability for a scheduled match unless such unavailability has been advised to the team manager at the outset. VMCU competition dates of play are published on the VMCU website and in MyCricket as they are finalized while Inter-Association Challenge rounds will be posted here together with any squad training information that managers wish to have publicized.

Team Managers and their contact details are available from the Administration page.
